Taiwan's new award winning singer-composer Joanna Wang recently commented in an interview with Apple Daily that "being a pop idol is great embarrassment", sparking much debate in the industry there.

The General Manager of Rock Records was among those who condemned her. He reproached Wang for showing disrespect to the profession despite depending on it for a living, and slammed that she should quit if she found it embarrassing. He also stated that all music is worthy of appreciation.

In the interview, Wang was bold in admitting that she could not accept the limitations and rules in the music industry. She despised how music is manipulated by businessmen for monetary reasons, and is not pleased that her record company has packaged her as "Taiwan's Ono Lisa" who sings cover versions of Western oldies.

Several singers also expressed their thoughts about Wang's comments. Wu Bai commented that what Wang stated were facts but also was glad that he has a fair amount of authority in the direction of his own compositions and escaped the "ordeal".

Local singer JJ Lin has also been through the same struggle and turmoil, but he does not think that it is embarrassing to be a pop idol. He feels that being clear about one's personal goals is more important. Taken from Yahoo
